  About Yemen
Young Generation.
[08/November/2004] Yemen is one of the countries where youngsters rate is very high. The young generation segment aging (10-24 years) makes up about 33.5% of the total population.

The demographical policy 2001-2025 had given special attention to the young generation in a bid to protect them from being exploited and to ensure their rights as well as to provide them with necessary requirements. But there are several difficulties retard the development of this significant segment .

In the field of education there is a large percentage of illiteracy estimated at 27% among males ( aging 10 years and above) whereas it is 67% among females. As the population national council surveys studies showed up in 2003.

There is also 23% of male children whose ages (6-14 years old) are out of schools while the percentage raised up to 45% among females of the same age.

Statistics issued in 2002 and 2003 by the ministry of education indicated that the gross number of male teachers reached to (132,000) against (34861) of female ones.

The primary schools of female students calculated (536) against (1029) for males. Furthermore, statistics indicated that 67% of instructors had merely finished their secondary education. .

In the health sphere the youth segment suffers from the early marriage phenomenon- particularly females.Though the marriage age average raised up to 23 years old , indicators showed up that 14% of the girls who got married at the age of (15 –19 years old) become mothers and percentage goes up to 17% in the countryside.

Family organizing manners being used by women are still very limited. There is about 7% of married women who are between (15-24 years old) used family organizing materials , while the average rate among the total married women within the age (15-45 years old) estimated at 13%.

The infant mortality rate run up to 128 per 1000 of children whose mothers ages came under 20 years old, whereas the general mortality rate of infants is 75% per 1000, based on the field surveys results in 1997.

Due to the high growth of population , the segment of young generation who enter the labor market from 15 years old and forth on had increased rapidly from 7.6 to 9.3 million over the period 1995-2000.
Hence, the rate of unemployment among youth who graduated from educational institutions reached to 22% , meanwhile it is estimated at 12% among youngsters aging 15-24 years old.

The population work program 2001-2005 concentrates on reducing illiteracy percentage and narrowing the gap between males and females and urban and rural regions.
It aims at increasing the rate of accession to the basic education to come up to 76% of the children who come to the age .
