Arrangements underway to establish tourist resort

HODIEDAH, Dec. 15 (Saba)- Arrangements have gotten underway to establish a tourist resort on the island of Kamaran.

Kamaran Island is the largest Yemeni island in the Red Sea. The 108-km² island is 18 km long and 7 km wide and is strategically located at the southern end of the Red Sea.

The director of the Tourism Office in Hodeidah province Abdullah al-Kalwi said on Wednesday that the tourist project will include swimming pools, restaurants and water sports at a cost of up to YR 1.3 billion.

He also said there are currently 6 tourist projects are being implemented at a cost of US$ 65 million and include the establishment of chalets and hotels.

The six tourist projects will be opened by the middle of 2011.

It is located in the shallow waters of the Arabian peninsula's continental shelf with coral reefs surrounding three sides of the island. The population numbers 2,200.

Kamaran had been inhabited for centuries when the Portuguese established an outpost there in the 16th century.
