At least 14 killed in riots in Port Sudan
[30 January 2005] KHARTOUM, (Saba) - Police clashed with tribesmen Sunday in the Red Sea coastal city of Port Sudan, leaving at least 14 people dead and 16 injured, a government official said. The United Nations said police fired on peaceful demonstrators.

A dusk-to-dawn curfew was imposed and 100 people were arrested after the riots, which flared Friday during demonstrations by members of the Beja community of eastern Sudan who are seeking more powers and resources for their region.

The U.S. Embassy to Sudan warned Americans living in Sudan to avoid unnecessary travel to Port Sudan. The official Sudanese News Agency said a dusk-to-dawn curfew was imposed in the area for Saturday and Sunday.
