Aden Free zone, Yemen's gate to trade and investment
[21/May/2004] SANA'A, (Saba)- The importance position of Aden comes from its economical and commercial role in the history as an important
market in south of Arab peninsula and the link of the international trade. Aden has moved large steps to do its role as an international
port to become one of the most important port in the world.
That important change of Aden port as an international port because of the geographical location and the suitable nature that made it one of the best ports in the world. Through more than half a century Aden did its role as an international transit port and a station for the international ships.

Special priority and development projects:

After independence from British colonialism and achieving the Yemeni unity after 23 years Aden town and port have appeared as a special
issue, Aden was considered the economic and trade capital and was announced establishing the free zone on area 31 hectare.

Aden town has been qualified by projects of infrastructure that made the town witnessing a great developing and improving in various fields such as increase unloading and loading at tanker port in Caltex area by work energy 500,000 tankers a year as well as increasing the number of giant ships that holding tankers capacity 6000 tankers.The area of free zone was divided into 15 parts most of them were Aden port , tanker port, airport, village of air loading, region of heavy, light and petrochemical industries as well as the tourist areas.

During the last 8 years the administration of free zone carried out a number of main projects that included developing lands, establishing a special security, paving roads, establishing a village of air loading, region of industries tourist region, promoting and
marketing.The movement and the number of ships of tanker port during the last period till 2001 increased to 8660 ships but this movement
dropped down after the accident of USS Cole and the French oil tanker Lamberge as well as the announcement of the international
credit companies to increase the per cent of credit on the ships that coming to the Yemeni ports.

Facing challenges:

Yemeni government represented by Transport Ministry has tried to pass that challenges by negotiating that has been put insurance for
credit companies reached to $50 million, then the ships continuing its activities to the port where arrived to the Aden port 107 ship
from January to April 2004. And the number of ships that arrived to Aden in 2003 were 50 ship.The movement of tanker reached in January
to April 2004 to 242962 tanker and 20660 in 2003.The total of permissive projects from May 2000 to May 2004 reached to 72 in industry, storing, trading tourism and services in cost $82,233,512.
Free zone witnessed in 2004 a notable activity reached to YR 4,464,325,000 and the total cost of arriving goods by the crossing of tanker pavement reached to YR 11,320,000,000 and the cost of export by tanker port reached to YR 577,366,000.In the framework of the efforts of reactivating Aden port ,the government has connected in April 2004 with international companies of marine credit to decrease the credit as war risks to 0,0125% on the ship that transport tankers 0,04% on trading loading ships.

Competitive features:

The Administration of Free Zone identified in last March the annual rents of investmental lands and non-development lands to encourage
investment in the region.During the celebrations of 14th anniversary of Yemeni unification the Aden Free zone witnesses opening and putting base stones fro a number of projects in total cost $548,000 and Aden central stores for cold in cost $450,000 and base stone would be put for other 8 projects in cost$ 46,538,000 including fragrance, steel, clothes factories and a box of petroleum derivatives and gathering motors as well as tourist village.
