France supports Brussels Conference on restorative justice in Yemen
[16/October/2014]

SANA'A, Oct. 16 (Saba) - The French ambassador to Yemen affirmed on Thursday his country's support for Brussels conference on restorative justice in Yemen to be held at the end of October in Belgium's capital.

"Sitting at the same table for talking about achieving the national reconciliation through restorative justice is important and requisite to spare the country the repercussions of armed conflicts," Jean-Marc Grosgurin said during a meeting with members of the Brussels conference preparatory committee and representatives of political parties and civil society organizations, which will take part in the conference.

He said that the restorative justice would create an appropriate political climate to implement the outcomes of the national dialogue and hold a referendum on the new constitution.

The solution to the Yemen's problems would be only provided by the Yemenis themselves, because they are more familiar with their problems and ways to solve them, he said, hoping the success of the initiative to be launched at the Brussels Conference, which he described as a Yemeni initiative.

Jamal al-Awadi, the Executive Director of the National Centre for Human Rights and Democratic Development, reviewed the underway arrangements for the conference, which is organized by the Center in collaboration with the International Network for Rights and Development in Oslo, Norway, with the participation of 26 participants representing the political parties and CSOs.

The conference will discuss a program of restorative justice in Yemen in order to turn the page of the past and open a new page of joint political action without exclusion of any party, as well as compensating those affected during past events, al-Awadi said.

The Algerian and Irish experiences in resolving disputes through restorative justice would be reviewed during the conference, he added.
