EU offers 18.3 mln euro for Yemen social security
[18/March/2010]

SANA'A, March 18 (Saba)- The European Union has offered a sum of 18.3 million euro for social security network in Yemen to contribute to creating temporary work opportunities through the implementation of a hundred projects in social development.

Ambassador of the European Union in Sana'a Michele Cervone d'Urso made clear to Saba that the program contains two components; the first focuses on implementing social development projects while the other will support poor categories through Social Welfare Fund (SWF).

"The current EU support for the SWF targets the provision of direct financial aid for 41 thousand poor families in 58 districts out of 7 governorates affected by floods, Hadramout and Mahara, rebellion, Saada and Amran, and child trafficking, in Hajjah, Mahweet and Hudeidah," the ambassador said.

He noted that this support comes within the continuous support provided by the EU for social welfare network in order to alleviate sufferings of the poorest categories.

The European Union is considered the key donor of the Social Welfare Fund and this support is a part of a total of 60 million euro meant for facing food security in Yemen as announced in 2009.
