UNESCO, GTZ finance Zabid traditional crafts at $50,000

ZABID, July 25 (Saba) - The project of reviving the traditional crafts, financed at $50 thousand by UNESCO Office in Cairo and the German Development Cooperation (GTZ) Project for the Development of Historical Cities, started here on Saturday.

The project, which is carried out by the Society for the Revival of Zabid Old Market, aims at improving and developing the local crafts as well as creating job opportunities for the eligible cadres from the city's residents.

The project includes reviving three crafts which are blacksmithing.sewing and sesame oil production, in addition to the rehabilitation and renovation of buildings' works.

The rehabilitation of 50 old shops in Zabid city co-financed by the GTZ and the shops' owners is also included in the project's work. 

These projects come in the framework of the economic rehabilitation of Zabid city to contribute to avoiding the UNESCO's decision to write off the city from the list of the international human heritage.
